N.H. Moose Hunt Permit Auction
As part of a program to support the conservation of wildlife and natural places throughout the state, each year the Executive Director of the N.H. Fish and Game Department donates up to five moose hunting permits to the Wildlife Heritage Foundation of New Hampshire. The permits allow the holder to harvest one moose of either sex in a wildlife management unit of the holder's choice during the moose season.
Proceeds from the auction of these permits go to support the critical education and conservation programs of the N.H. Fish and Game Department and its partners.
The 2010 N.H. Moose Permit Auction has closed. Bids will be opened on August 6, 2010. |
Five Bid Winners Report Great New Hampshire Experiences in 2009
During the first year of the Wildlife Heritage Foundation's N.H. moose permit auction (2009), four out of the five winning bidders reported successful hunts and everyone reported having a great time. Three bulls and one cow moose were taken by winning bidders. All hunts took place in the North Country, ranging from WMU A1 & A2 in the northern tip of the state, to WMU C1 in the northeastern corner of the state.
One very happy hunter, Joe Hill of Mississippi, took a bull that weighed 940 pounds dressed and sported a 57-inch antler spread on the fifth day of his hunt. As it turned out, his moose was the largest bull taken during the 2009 season, according to the Fish and Game Department.

"The really neat thing is that we have this particular moose on the 2009 pre-season moose video on our website," said David Noyes, Hill's sub-permittee and a guide with Northern NH Guide Services. "Joe was very happy and wanted to make sure that you all knew what a successful hunt he had. Keep up the good work."
New Hampshire resident Eric Olsen, another auction winner, told the Foundation, "It was a beautiful hunt. I own 1,100 acres in Northern New Hampshire and so I hunted my own property. I passed up 5 different opportunities to finally end up taking a bull moose with a 52-inch antler spread. I hope to get the opportunity to bid on next year's moose hunt."
Maryland resident and auction winner Mike Bennaman brought his son up to New Hampshire for the hunt as his sub-permittee. In a follow-up email, he reported, "What a great time. I harvested a 42-inch-spread bull that dressed out at 692 lbs.; it was one of the most fun hunts that I have taken over the years. I am sure the donated funds (from the auction) will be well used, and I am already looking forward to the auction for next year."
Deborah Remillard and her husband shared their winning bids and were sub-permittees for each other. She reported, "We were in the Pittsburg area most of the time. ... I shot a large cow moose, 530 lbs, but Robert didn't shoot anything. He passed on a cow and a small bull, but he still had a lot of fun."
